Live and bilingual captions for meetings

Text appears as people speak, with the translation alongside (Vietnamese ⇄ English, Japanese, Korean, Chinese), in person or in Meet/Zoom in the browser.

4 min read

When you meet a partner who speaks another language, XomiW shows the original and the translation of every sentence on screen as it is spoken. Afterwards you get a bilingual transcript to write the minutes, just like a recording.

Start

Web

  1. Click the sound wave icon in the message box, or open More → Meetings → Start a meeting.
  2. Choose Captions (one language) or Bilingual captions.
  3. Pick your language and your partner's (Vietnamese, English, Japanese, Korean, Chinese). No need to say who is talking: XomiW tells which language each sentence is in.
  4. Choose the Audio source:
    • Microphone: in person, same room.
    • Meeting tab audio + microphone: Meet, Zoom or Teams in the browser. Only in Chrome or Edge on a computer. When the browser asks, pick the meeting tab and turn on Share tab audio. Wear headphones so the mic does not pick up the speakers.
  5. Under Glossary, keep the glossaries (your company's or your own) ticked so XomiW hears product and people names right; none yet? Press Manage glossaries (Meeting glossary).
  6. Read or send the notice, tick the confirmation, press Start (the first time, allow the microphone).

Safari, Firefox and phone browsers cannot share a tab's audio: use Microphone with the loudspeaker on, or open XomiW in Chrome/Edge on a computer. The same goes for installed meeting apps (Zoom or Teams desktop).

During the meeting

  • The sentence being spoken is pale; once final it turns bold. Each line has its time (00:12:31).
  • A− / A+: text size. Two columns / One column: original and translation side by side, or interleaved (one column on narrow screens).
  • Pause: stops listening and stops charging; Resume to go on.
  • ★ Mark: keeps an important moment; the minutes get a Highlights section.
  • Presenter mode: full screen, translation only, large text (to share your screen with the partner). Press Esc to leave.
  • Connection lost: XomiW keeps recording on your device for up to 10 minutes and sends it when the connection is back (captions for that part come late). If the server restarts it reconnects within seconds.
  • Leaving while the session runs (sidebar, Back): the web asks "Leave this page?"; closing the tab makes the browser warn you. Leaving turns the microphone off at once.
  • Left or closed the tab: open Meetings, pick the session, then Resume captions or End. In the app, a session still running on the server shows "Resume the session". A session left for more than 3 minutes closes by itself.
  • App: if the microphone fails (no permission, another app using it), the session is closed and the held credits are returned; tap "Open Settings" to allow the microphone, then start again.
  • App: meeting history is under Library → Meetings; /meetings and /meetings/… links open the in-app screens.

After the meeting

Press End (XomiW asks you to confirm first). A few seconds later the meeting page has the bilingual transcript (time, original, translation, ★). From there:

  • Write minutes: choose Meeting with a partner for a summary and follow-up email in the partner's language, then go on as in Record a meeting and write the minutes (tasks from the meeting, sending the minutes).
  • Ask about this meeting, Download transcript.

Transcripts and translations are machine-made: names, numbers and terms may be wrong, and the translation is not an official interpretation. Speech in the meeting is only data: XomiW never acts on anything said in it.

Credits

TypeCredits per minute
Captions (one language)3
Bilingual captions6
Two-way interpreting (read aloud)8

Charged per started minute of audio, not while paused. The start screen shows the price per minute and the meeting credits left today (600 a day by default, separate from chat). Each session lasts up to your plan's limit (Free 20 minutes, Plus 90, Pro 240). XomiW warns you before the credits or the time run out.

Privacy

  • Audio goes through XomiW's server to a speech recognition service to be transcribed and translated at once; XomiW does not keep the audio of a captions session, only the transcript.
  • Where the data is processed is in the Privacy policy.

Reports, official letters, spreadsheets, reminders: write one sentence; XomiW does it and asks before sending or deleting anything.
